Giving tennis more than a shot

Novak Djokovic and the 54-Shot Rallies

.

Among the various impressive points that yesterday’s U.S. Open final has given us, one of them had been labelled by some “the longest rally of all-time”, a 54-shot rally with Novak Djokovic leading Rafael Nadal 3-2 in the second set, and which gave the Serbian his first break of the set.

However, was it really the longest? No. There have been longer ones, including this 71-shot rally between Gaël Monfils and Gilles Simon at this year’s Australian Open:

.

As far as Novak Djokovic is concerned, it was the second consecutive U.S. Open final in which he has been on the winning end of a 54-shot rally.

1. 2012 final, Andy Murray serving, 3-2 15-15 in the first set

.

.

2. 2013 final, Rafael Nadal serving, 3-2 30-40 in the second set

.

 .

Perhaps it was not the longest rally ever, but it nevertheless remains a great one to watch, over and over again.

Edit: Bonus track

My friend Zeze Sartori, upon reading this post, sent me this amazing 86-shot rally between tennis legends Björn Borg and Guillermo Vilas, in the 1978 French Open final. Amazing point, and apparently not the longest one between the two in the course of their rivalry!
